To create an all-around positive experience, patient and hospital needs are matched as closely as possible to the individual volunteer, accommodating personal schedules and interests.

Emergency DepartmentRequirement: At least 18 years old 
Provide support to Emergency Department staff and patients' family and friends, assist nurses as directed. May visit waiting patients in examining rooms to lend support and provide non-medical information.

Occupational Therapy
Assist with the maintenance of patient care materials, perform routine errands within the hospital, transport patients back to their rooms or to other areas of the hospital.

Patient Care Unit
Provide indirect patient care services such as: offering patient support, providing water and meal trays, transporting patients to various locations within the hospital, making unoccupied beds.

Patient Visitor - Korean And Russian Community
Communicate with patient in his/her native language, provide patient support when needed, act as liaison between patients and health care staff.

Perianesthesia Care Unit
Distribute juice and coffee trays to post-op patients, transport or escort stable patients to various locations within the hospital, assist CNA/technician in cleaning and stocking.

Psychiatric Unit 
Requirements: At least 18 years old and psychology background
Engage patients and family in conversation, perform clerical tasks, which include photo copying, organizing, routine errands and other clerical duties.

Central Service
Help examine, fold and package surgical towels, package instruments for sterilization, transport patient care equipment from main building to Galter Medical Pavilion building.

Central Transportation
Assist in transporting patients between Patient Care Units and ancillary departments, deliver equipment and supplies, retrieve wheelchairs and carts.

Child Care Center
Supervise children during outdoor/indoor play time according to Montessori philosophy and city and state guidelines, interact with, and serve snack to children.

Clerical
Assist in preparation or distribution of mail, copy and/or file departmental materials, deliver and/or collect department materials at other hospital locations, collate charts or other informational materials.

Floater
Fulfill various volunteer positions as assigned according to hospital needs, duties are assigned by the Director of Volunteer Resources or designee.

Gift Shop
Demonstrate excellent customer service and sales skill, assist with cash register transactions, assist with merchandising items, displays, and routine maintenance.

Lobby Services
Assist with greeting, screening and directing all persons entering the hospital, answer telephone calls regarding patient information, communicate hospital policies and procedures information.

Materials Services
Assist with paper work, filing, cleaning, sorting, delivery of incoming goods, and bringing "return goods" from departments to Shipping and Receiving.

Medical Library
Specific duties will be determined by the medical librarian. These duties may include: acting as a receptionist, copying and/or file departmental materials, and data entry.

Newspaper Delivery
Offer newspapers, magazines or books to patients in the patient care units and waiting areas, replace and remove old magazines when necessary.

Pharmacy Department
Requirements: At least 18 years old and pharmacy technician license
Assist personnel in transporting "stat" medications to patient care unit for patient, sort returned medications, audit inventory for out-dates.

Upholding the mission and values of Swedish Covenant Hospital is a core element of volunteer resources. As a volunteer you will be responsible for ensuring that our patients feel safe and welcome while they are here. To guarantee our patients the best of care all volunteer applicants must:

- Be at least 15 years of age
- Be in good mental, physical and emotional health
- Prospective volunteer 15 to 17 years old must have 2 recommendation forms completed by teachers, counselors, or non related adults
- Prospective volunteer 18 years old or older must pass a criminal background check
- Review volunteer handbook and submit application and required paperwork
- Complete a personal interview
- Attend orientation and on-the-job training
- Complete health screening (tests include TB, Rubella and Rubeola)
- Commit to a minimum of 100 service hours  

 

*Please note that the process to become a volunteer takes an average of 4 to 6 weeks.

Once your application has been submitted and reviewed by the director of volunteer resources you will be asked to an interview. If you are accepted as a volunteer your next step to becoming a volunteer will be to attend orientation, health screenings and on-the-job training.

Orientation
Attendance at General Hospital Orientation is mandatory. Information unique to Swedish Covenant Hospital (such as policies and procedures) are presented, and participants have the opportunity to ask questions. This information is necessary to provide and maintain a safe environment for our patients, volunteers, visitors and staff.

Training
On-the-job training is provided by the appropriate staff members and/or experienced volunteer. Volunteers are required to adhere to a written volunteer job description for the area to which they have been assigned.

Volunteer Placement
Your personal goals and desires will be taken into account when determining your volunteer assignment. While every effort is made to accommodate the volunteer, the priority is to assist a department of the Hospital in meeting its goals and objectives. Volunteers do not replace paid staff.

Evaluation
An annual evaluation is completed for long-term volunteers (volunteers serving for a year or longer). For short-term volunteers, such as students fulfilling the minimum 60 hour requirement, the first few weeks are considered a mutual evaluation period. During this time, either the volunteer or the department may determine that the placement is not appropriate.

Annual Requirement
Each year, long-term volunteers are required to complete an annual review, along with an annual TB screening.

 

Guidelines

As a representative of the Volunteer Resources Department and Swedish Covenant Hospital, it is important that you maintain a professional attitude and appearance while you are on the Swedish Covenant Hospital campus.

Conduct
Volunteers are not permitted to:
- Smoke, chew gum, eat or drink while on duty
- Display inappropriate acts of affection, talk loudly or laugh boisterously
- Seek or give medical advice
- Act as a witness or sign legal documents of any kind
- Assist patients without permission and explicit direction from appropriate staff
- Adjust or tamper with medical equipment

Timekeeping
Keeping track of volunteer hours is extremely important to us as it is to you.Timecards are provided, and should be filled out in the Volunteer Workroom located in the East Wing Basement before and after ever shift.

Absences
While absences are inevitable, we ask that you contact the volunteer supervisor personally if you cannot make it to your assignment for any reason. If you are going to be late, or cannot make it to your assignment please call our voice mail at 773 878-8200, Ext. 5273 and tell your supervisor at least two hours prior to your assignment time.

Dress Code
It is vital that while you are volunteering you dress appropriately.Please maintain good personal hygiene (i.e. clean hands, nails, and hair neatly pulled back).A volunteer jacket and I.D. badge are provided by the Hospital and must be worn when volunteering. Jackets and badges may not be altered.
Volunteers are to avoid extremes in fashion, hairstyling, make-up and fragrance.
The following are not part of the volunteer dress code:
- Blue jeans
- Shorts
- Jogging suits
- T-shirts with questionable verbiage
- Open-toe shoes, sandals
- Hospital scrubs
- Tank tops and low-cut tops

Active volunteers at Swedish Covenant Hospital receive a range of discounts after a 4-month mutual evaluation has been completed. These benefits include:

Parking
Volunteers are encouraged to park in the Hospital's parking garage. Free parking is available to all volunteers.

Food Service
A meal ticket is provided to every volunteer each day he/she is on duty. The cafeteria is open daily (please check bulletin board for hours).

Special Discounts
Discounts are available to currently active volunteers who have successfully completed the minimum hour requirement and are continuing their volunteer service:
- Pharmacy items are available at average wholesale cost
- Volunteers receive a 25% discount on the self-pay portion of their hospital bill (example: if the total bill is $1,000 and insurance pays $800, the remaining $200 will be discounted 25%)
- The hospital will pay the initiation fee required to join the Galter Life Center.
